Race 8 THE HONG KONG UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION CHALLENGE
- RIVER CENTAINE when questioned, rider explained the horse last season was
proving very difficult to settle in its races, was racing towards the front
and pulling hard. He said because it is difficult to manage on the track, it
is usually ridden by the trainer or one of the heavy weight work riders. He
said he has not ridden it in work but has trialed it. He also pointed out
before the race the trainer had said to him the new bit it was using seemed
to have encouraged it to settle. It was suggested by the trainer if it left
the gates well, he should take up a position somewhere towards the front,
but he was to ensure it was relaxed in the run. He said it left the gates a
little awkwardly, shifted in, became unbalanced, then he thought it settled
nicely and traveled well and as a consequence got much further back in the
race than was the intention. He said however because of the manner in which
it was traveling, he felt it was advisable to leave it in the position which
he found himself. He went on to say during the race he followed a runner, on
straightening was able to shift out and find running inside another runner,
and he was of the view in the circumstances it had enjoyed a good run in the
race. He said in the straight when in the clear it finished off well, but
did have a tendency to become momentarily unbalanced on occasions and change
legs. He concluded by saying although it got back in the race, it may be
that in the future if racing over more ground, it will take up a position
somewhat closer to the front. Explanations were accepted - Race 9.
